Frequently Asked Questions

Will filing a claim raise my premium even if it’s approved?

Short answer: Sometimes, yes — even an approved, paid claim can affect your rate at renewal, separate from any claims-free discount you might lose. We factor this into our honest recommendation before you file.

Long answer: Two different things can happen to your rate after a claim, and they’re often confused with each other.

First, some policies include a claims-free discount that disappears the moment a claim is filed — regardless of the payout amount, and sometimes regardless of whether it’s later denied. Second, separately, your insurer may adjust your premium at renewal based on claims history, particularly if you’ve filed more than once in a certain window.

Neither of these is a reason to avoid filing a legitimate, significant claim — insurance exists for exactly that. But for smaller, borderline damage, the math sometimes doesn’t favor filing once you weigh the discount loss and potential renewal impact against the payout. This is exactly the kind of tradeoff we walk through with you before you file anything, using our background on both the adjusting and agency side of this business.
